Werewolf Women of the SS (2007)
"Grindhouse", Quentin Tarantino's personal homage to Grindhouse cinema, features two full-length movies directed by himself and Robert Rodriguez interspersed with 'trailers' for fake grindhouse movies, directed by Eli Roth, Edgar Wright and Rob Zombie.
One of these fake trailers is for a movie called "Werewolf Women of the SS", directed by Rob Zombie and starring Nicolas Cage as Fu Manchu.
To be honest, I found the whole "Grindhouse" project to be a bit self-indulgent and patronising. I've seen my fair share of Grindhouse-level movies in the process of running this website, and I really don't see the point in this big-budget homage. Grindhouse movies have their place (e.g. the Grindhouse), and really don't belong in mainstream cinema ... that's kind of the whole point. It was somewhat proven by the fact that audiences actually started walking out after the first movie, not getting the whole "double feature" concept, and they were eventually forced to release them seperately.
Having said that, I do believe that Tarantino is passionate about this genre of movies and that there is a lot of fun to be had here. The fake trailers are among the highlights of this whole project, and "Werewolf Women of the SS" is possibly the best one (though it's interesting to see that "Machette" has been put into production). This non-existent movie tells the story of Hitler's evil plot to create a race of super women ... that is, super WEREWOLF WOMEN!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Ahem. Anyhoo, it looks like pretty much your standard Grindhouse fare. Nazis, tits, machine guns, werewolves. What more does a movie really need? I think that the trailer is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, but it's difficult to parody those kinds of movies since they tend to be so ludicrous in the first place. I will say, however, that the Nicolas Cage cameo is a moment of pure genius.
